What is search engine optimization?

Hi I've heard SEO and this title people are talking about but could someone please explain to me what exactly it means? I think it has something to do with what I call my websites or their website address?

It is optimizing your website for search engines to get more traffic. For example using keywords more and getting links to your site.

When you do a Google or YAHOO search for some keywords, SEO is used to try to get to the top of the search engine page. The higher up you are the more likely you'll get clicked.

Well if you have more link coming to your site with the anchor text "candy" than "cane" and more words on your site that include "candy" than "cane" you will be ranked higher for "Candy".
