When you design a site do you go for fancy or are you more into having something simple and functional?

Depending on the site I go professional and simple. If the client isn't to good with the internet, I don't want them wondering how to go to something - I want them to be able to see how to go to it so they come back and/or purchase something.

Yeh I was thinking myself that it can changed based on what type of site you are creating and for what purpose.

It all depends on the client. Some of my clients want very simple layouts and others want something all shiny and orb-like. It also depends on my designers enthusiasm for a project.

I like simple, clean, sleek, professional-looking, and functional design. I would like being in a site that has too many blinking banners or buttons, because it distracts me. So I take this same approach to my web sites' design.

well it al depends on the type of site becuase you can go fancy and the client doesn't like it so it varies from time to time
I keep my designs simple and clean. Nothing flashy and high-tech. and Yes it is true that it all depends upon the clients that what they exactly want. if your client has not much knowledge about designing and all that stuff then u should present a design simple, but if he knows much then u need to pay more attention to ur work and inspire him more :)

I go simple & clean. Simple loads fast and is easy to use. Makes easier for editing as well, because I don't have to sift through 300 lines of HTML.

Simple, then if they don't like it, you just add to it. :) That's what I do for my clients.

Depends on if it is a professional site, or a personal site. Personal sites, I do go a little more advanced to make it unique, but otherwise it is pretty simple.
When i do a professional one, I go all out basically. I do my best to make it unique, something that will not be seen on the net except on my site.

Hi,
I think this is a very classic question which you can keep on discussing about. But my personal preference is to go for simplicity ( unless and untill going fancy is the design guideline by client itself). It is not impossible to achive an aesthetically appealing visuals and still being simple. I need not mention how simple the frontpage of Google is. We go to Google just because it let us do our things and move on rather confusing us. For me simplicity rules and I go for it.
Thanks and Regards,

I like to keep things simple and sober. It helps me with giving the site a clutter free environment. The reader must feel soothened up when he visits the site. The information/posts are also kept simple and error free so that is does not irritate the visitor. Fancy sites good for themes like travelling, music & movies and games.

I as well only like simple, smooth and colorful websites (not dull colors though unless it's gray). I do not like techy websites or "professional" websites like hosting websites (not trying to advertise, but a site such as http://www.bluehost.com )
I try to keep images out of my template as they slow up the loading and can cause problems in some cases. You can make a design just as good as it would be with images as it would be without images. You just have to use imagination and be creative.

Almost like any other poster, I love to go simple..too much writing turns me off, although images is not a problem with me I don't like using hyper links on my images, and anyway it all depends on what kind of site you are designing. It should go straight to the point and maybe should have a theme to it depends on how fancy you want to get.

Just remember, any of the professional sites put the emphasis on the content rather than the site itself. If the site is too flashy, it will draw attention away from the content and possibly become hazardous to navigate.
On the other hand, a boring website will bore surfers away, so the best websites are found somewhere in the middle :P
