Are you looking for .com .net and .org domains for free? I'm not aware of any at the moment, but namecheap, and Godaddy are fairly inexpensive.
Or are you talking about a domain like .co.nr or .tk which redirects to another website and can either cloak the domain or not?
Most of the free domain providers probably require that you have some traffic and that you place their ad on your site. Are you ok with that?

i know about some forum who give you totally free domain name with your own control.
they need some posting in forum & they give points for every post.
But you need to make good non-spam post, if you make spam, you will be get banned from this forums.

I think its impossible to find a provider who gives domain name for free
maybe posting in forum can earn you free domains

If you need a free domain name, your best bet is to go with freedomain.co.nr as they mask your urls unlike freedomain.tk
Other than that your looking at purchasing a domain name.
I happen to know that godaddy.com have a sale on .info domains.
Only $0.99!
It's worth checking out.
I think the only way you will get a free .com/.net etc domain is on a forum where you post to get them, might take you a while though.
I would say though that you should buy one though, they are very cheap and it feels much better when you buy one yourself :)

If you don't buy anything from godaddy, godaddy don't give you domain at 0.99$
and .co.nr or .tk is not support dns feature. they only give you redirection to your site. if you want to use this kind domains (not domain, they are subdomain) use uni.cc or freedns.afraid.org, they are good and support dns feature for free.

No, the .info domains are only $0.99, you don't have to buy anything else.

moinuddin102 is right, you better choose from his choice of sites. I prefer personally ddboard.com as the right choice. My request for you guys to not to go to betlik.com, they are the big spammers. Aware of them!

In order to get a free domain name, i have a guide setup. It takes about an hour of your time and you have it for a year. Go here:
http://www.stereofreak69.com/free/
It has instructions for free hosting, free TLD (.con, net, org, info) and even a part to integrate google stuff into it. Just pay attention to the domain name one. Either step 2 or 3. I have my email at the bottom of every page if you need help. You get it free by filling out some sponcer surveys. About an hour or two is all you need, and you have full DNS over it all. I suggest it a lot. I have my domain there. Once again,

Hope it helps!
