If you are the owner of a new website(domain), probably you would have heard of Google sandbox. Google sandbox is a theory that says google put your website in a period, at which your website cannot get a good ranking despite your good efforts especially your domain is new. So many SEO experts suggest you go for an old domain which is already listed in google. If you decide to use a new domain, the suggestion is that you should first target on low keywords to rank your site rather than going for high keywords, which have a great deal of competition. Also if your domain is new it is better to start your link building( submitting to directories, social bookmarking site, reciprocal linking...) slowly and steadily. Building links very quickly is discouraged.
