Actually , theres no point in submitting site to seach engines . Keep working on your site , start increasing the number of backlinks and you will be indexed easily . Though you can submit to other small SEs but IMO its not worthed .

I'm not sure about the other sites, but it's simple to add your site to the google, by using the following URL :
http://www.google.com/addurl/
Just get few incoming links from other sites and Googlebot and other major search engine robots will find your website and after they crawl your website, it will be indexed in next 3-4 days. A perfect method would be to put your new website's link in a busy forum's signature.

I don't think it will not work out. ....most forums have a NOFOLLOW tags, which means that the Google will not index pages with that type of links...but don't worry, Yahoo! and MSN will index it...
But backlinks will be a gr8 bait for Google bots...and there are some free directories out there for submitting your site for getting indexed by Google....it will increase your Page Rank too....
Does anybody know how much time does it take to get indexed? I have a site which is online for weeks, but is still not on google :S

From my experience, I used to submit to major search engines manually. I also do SEO so that it will index properly. If we submit manually to search engines, it will index faster. Even in some cases it take more time.

I usually do not submit my sites to search engines. Sometimes I use automatic submissions like freewebsubmission.com, etc. for search engine submissions.

I submit them by sitemaps
Sitemaps really helps spiders to crawl your site better than ever. Note this Only makes crawling effective. Then I wait for a few days and then I can find that all pages are indexed.

Really? I don't think one can submit website to search engine. I think search engine automatically find the websites. I don't know the exact name but it might be called as (Crawling).
You can submit your site to directories, signature of forums, blogs, link exchanges. Then your site will automatically come to search engines.
But I am really waiting to see the list of search engines that krawner talked about.

You can submit your site to certain search engines, although all it acutally does is add your site to the list of sites to crawl the next time their spider is doing its rounds :). As mentioned before, the best way is through quality links - writing articles, forums, directories (both general and industry-specific). Hence when I get back to my PC this weekend, I'm going put up some of my PHP articles in that tutorial thread I made (all with nice backlinks :))
